Shurflo pumps; Ever tried tightening a fitting to a Shurflo pump only to snap the pump head at the thread? Bloody annoying!!!
1/2" Male threaded models are intended to be used with SHURflo Swivel Barb Fittings which seal with an internal taper when hand tightened.
Teflon Tape or pipe sealants are a big mistake as these allow for accidental 'overtightening' which often causes the pump housing to break off leaving the happy operator frustrated and annoyed.
Shurflo recomend the use of their fittings for use with the their pumps.

Of course there are other reasons for thread damage however, this does occur and creates great disappointment and frustration for the new owner who's just putting the new pump on the sprayer to start using.
